Darrell Peeden Moreno Valley School Board Member

January 14, 2019

In 2018, Darrell Peeden was appointed to the Moreno Valley School Board. His appointment meant a fresh, bold look at public policy in the District. In 2016, Mr. Peeden ran for Moreno Valley Mayor, his platform included reshaping the Moreno Valley economy which included working to reduce income inequality in the community. He promised to change the way the city spent money and what type of industry occupied the city. His plan was to focus on a community wealth development approach that would put Moreno Valley residents first by giving them the opportunities to create businesses that could provide the goods and services that the local city government used.

Why does this matter? Because for over a decade a company named Highland Fairview has bought the politicians in Moreno Valley. As a result, they have been using all that power for their own special interest. Their interest are to rezone much of the Moreno Valley land for outside corporate interest excluding the community from this process. They have continued to move forward with an economic system that attracts outside companies whose headquarters are not in Moreno Valley, therefore, the profits are sent elsewhere.

In late 2018, Mr. Peeden was recalled from the Moreno Valley School Board by Highland Fairview with the goal to privatize our public education system and to use their power on the school board to give away public land to private corporations. Mr. Peeden was recalled because he has been a vocal critic of Highland Fairview and Iddo Benzeevi. Mr. Peeden is an unapologetic supporter of public education.

Mr. Peeden has announced his campaign to be elected once again as a Moreno Valley School Board Member. If he wins, we can anticipate public policy that will be equitable and inclusive. His community wealth building strategy will help to build an economy locally that provides opportunity and living wage jobs for the students graduating from Moreno Valley Schools. Imagine a school district that purchases food that feeds their students from local businesses, and if these businesses do not exist, helping residents and students that graduate establish these companies in Moreno Valley in order to build community wealth. Through this type of innovative, inclusive policy making Moreno Valley will become a hub of innovation and community wealth.

Darrell Peeden's activism and ability to bring people together will prove valuable as he works towards these goals. His past proves he will set the tone for progressive policy. This is evident with his support of Presidential Candidate Senator Bernie Sanders.
